Assignment Bank: Warning Label

For this assignment, we were required to make a warning label for a futuristic technology. Valve’s Portal 1 and Portal 2 were great games, and saw this as a great way to showcase the Portal Gun. The Portal Gun is a device which can create two portals which connect any two points in space. I used Microsoft Paint, and given that Portal is copyrighted, I did not want to risk using an in-game screenshot, in case of copyright concern. With Portals, things like infinite falling become possible when not careful, and added stereotypical warnings commonly seen in medicine advertisements.

Assignment Bank: Menu Design

Back in the 1980’s, personal computers did not have a graphical user interface, but instead had users type directly into the console. The assignment was to create an interface/menu, and this does so by recreating a typical 1980’s personal computer interface. I made it in MS paint by typing text in the Fixedsys font, which is not often used and looks archaic. As a computer programming major, I’m fascinated by computer technology, going from huge bulky machines covering walls to portable devices which can fit in pockets, and the 1980’s was an important era for introducing the personal computer, which are now used every day.

Assignment bank Contradiction Creation

I usually try using contradictions as humor, and this assignment is perfect for that; create a glorious contradiction. I created this glorious image by finding a freely usable image of a rotting Coelacanth on Wikipedia, and used MS Paint to add text describing injecting the cold, rotting flesh and juicy preservatives as a great, crunchy midnight snack.

Assignment Bank: Missing Person

After seeing an assignment to create a poster for a missing poster, I had a great idea: Why not make this missing person a criminal, and why make it a person at all? On November 9th, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, and signaled the end of Communism in Europe. Being such a significant moment in history tying into our theme, this was an excellent opportunity to highlight that moment, as well as those who suffered under Communist rule during the decade by personifying Communism as an escaped murderer on the loose, nowhere to be found. I used Microsoft Paint for the assignment, using the text tool to write out the text, criticizing and describing both the horrors of the terrible ideology and it being overthrown as a person. I copied/pasted the USSR flag from Wikipedia, which is free use, and used the Old English Text MT font on the title to make it look like an authentic newspaper headline.
